Project overview
As part of a framework agreement with Anglian Water Services Limited, we were commissioned to conduct a comprehensive investigation for a proposed 40 km duplication water main. The project extended from Rutland Water to Hannington Reservoir in Northamptonshire and formed part of the £116 million Wing Water Supply Programme.
Our approach
The investigation involved:
- Drilling boreholes and machine-dug trial pits at 32 road crossings, 3 railway crossings, and 22 watercourses.
- Managing complex logistics, including coordinating with multiple landowners to ensure smooth progression and cost efficiency.
- Consulting and liaising with stakeholders throughout the project to maintain satisfaction and compliance.
Due to the significant length of the scheme, the geology encountered varied widely, requiring detailed logging and analysis by our engineering geologists to support an efficient design.
Geological strata encountered:
- Lias Group: Marine limestones, shales, marls, and clays.
- Inferior Oolite Series: Including Northampton Sands and Grantham Formation (mudstones, siltstones, sandstones).
- Lower Lincolnshire Limestone.
- Glacial Till.
Outcome
Our work enabled a robust and efficient design tailored to the geological conditions, meeting the requirements of Anglian Water and earning the satisfaction of landowners and stakeholders.
