Project overview
The B1039 Royston Road was proposed to be realigned to reduce traffic loadings that were contributing to the failure of an adjacent retaining wall (Chrishall Retaining Wall, Essex County Council Bridge No. 2975). The retaining wall supported a section of the road above a nearby stream.
Our approach
We conducted a site investigation to provide detailed information on the ground conditions expected during the road realignment. This included:
- Using tracked window sampling equipment with a road pavement coring attachment to analyse the existing pavement construction.
- Conducting dynamic cone penetration testing to establish design CBR (California Bearing Ratio) values.
- Calculating subgrade surface modulus stiffness to inform the design of the new road pavement.
Outcome
The investigation provided critical data for the design and construction of the realigned road, ensuring stability and long-term performance while mitigating the risk of further retaining wall failures.
